Malaucène without a car: a complete day on foot from your holiday home

Not every day in Provence needs to begin with a car journey. Malaucène is compact enough for a varied day on foot: historic lanes, a viewpoint, shops for lunch and a quiet green space are all in or close to the village.

Central Malaucène is walkable from Villa Vintour. That makes this itinerary useful as a rest day between rides, a gentle introduction after arrival or a simple day with children.

Morning: old Malaucène and the Calvary

Start along Cours des Isnards, the plane-tree-lined avenue where cafés and shops set the village rhythm. Then wander into the narrower historic streets. Old gateways, fountains and houses built against the former ramparts reward a slower look.

Climb to the Calvary on the site of the former castle. The top provides a 360-degree view across the roofs, the country towards Vaison-la-Romaine and the foothills of Mont Ventoux. Descend past the fortified Saint-Michel church and the old town gates.

Lunch: collect Provence from local shops

Pick up bread from a bakery and add fruit, cheese or something from a local deli. Market days add more choice, but always confirm the current day and opening hours with the tourist office because seasons and public holidays can change them.

Stay on a village terrace or carry lunch back to the villa garden. The latter works especially well when someone wants to swim or rest halfway through the day.

Afternoon: greenery and movement at Les Palivettes

For another walk, head towards Lac des Palivettes. Official visitor information describes it as a place for picnics and fishing, with a play area and fitness trail. It is deliberately low-key, which makes it a good fit for a slow afternoon close to home.

Another option is a walk towards the spring and chapel of Le Groseau at the foot of Ventoux. In hot weather or after poor conditions, ask locally for the best route and carry enough water.
