Mont Ventoux with a cycling group: accommodation and kit checklist
Plan a group cycling stay without logistical chaos, from secure bike storage and route choice to breakfast, recovery and shared spares.

A Mont Ventoux weekend with friends sounds straightforward: bring bikes, book a house and go. In practice, a few small choices decide whether the group spends its time riding or losing each morning to tools, bathrooms and food shopping.
This checklist is for groups using Malaucène as one fixed base. The official ascent starts in the village, while shorter and less extreme routes towards the Dentelles de Montmirail create useful alternatives.
1. Choose accommodation that can handle the group rhythm
Look beyond the bed count. For eight cyclists, several bathrooms, a large table, air conditioning and somewhere for wet kit matter just as much. Lockable indoor bike storage prevents valuable road bikes from staying outside or inside cars.
Villa Vintour has four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a lockable indoor storage room. The outdoor kitchen and large table also make group meals easy after a long ride.
2. Plan three types of riding day
- The main day: the official Mont Ventoux ascent from Malaucène, only in suitable weather and for well-trained riders.
- The scenic day: the official Entre Ventoux et Dentelles loop, a difficult route of about 29 kilometres with 715 metres of climbing.
- The recovery day: an easy coffee ride or full rest day in Malaucène, so every rider can follow a suitable programme.
Do not automatically schedule the hardest ride for the first morning. A flexible plan leaves room for wind, heat, fatigue and mixed ability within the group.
3. Split kit into personal and shared equipment
Every rider brings
- Helmet, glasses, gloves and kit for warm and cool weather.
- Two bottles, ride food and personal medication.
- A tube or plug kit that fits their own tyres.
- Front and rear lights, even for a planned daytime ride.
The group shares
- Track pump, torque wrench and compact tool kit.
- Quick link, spare brake pads and chain lubricant.
- First-aid kit, power bank and assistance contacts.
- Route files loaded onto every bike computer in advance.
4. Make breakfast and recovery predictable
Agree the night before when breakfast will be ready and who handles water and food. After the ride, use another simple order: bikes securely inside, wet clothing in one place, then food and drink. A private pool and shaded terrace feel excellent but do not replace a gradual cool-down, hydration and a real meal.
5. Check the mountain, not only the village forecast
Wind and temperature at the summit can differ sharply from Malaucène. Check current access and the mountain forecast that morning. Turn back if conditions deteriorate; Ventoux will still be there tomorrow.
The night-before check
- Check tyre pressure, brakes and drivetrain.
- Share the route and emergency contacts.
- Lay out clothing and food.
- Check weather and any road closures.
- Agree an alternative for anyone shortening the ride.
